Data Usage Tips for iPhone Users

Our Bell Corporate Smartphone Plan costs $14.30+tax for up to 6GB of data, with an additional $30.70+tax for
over 6GB. The billing period runs from the 12th of the previous month to the 11th of the current month.
Below are tips to help you manage and reduce your monthly cellular data usage.

Problem: Travelling outside of Canada - Data Roaming Charges

Tip #1: Disable Data Roaming before leaving Canada.

Suggestion: Avoid using cellular data while abroad unless necessary.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
  3. Tap Cellular Data Options.
  4. Turn off Data Roaming.

When travelling consider purchasing a SIM card in the country you are visiting.

Be Aware of Daily Roam Charges:

  • $13/day in the U.S.
  • $16/day in several international destinations
  • Use the data from your account while you travel.

NOTE: Daily Roam charge will apply if your cellular data is on for any length of time in a day.

Problem: Background App Refresh

Tip #2: Turn off Background App Refresh.

Suggestion: Disable background refresh or allow only critical apps to refresh.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Background App Refresh.
  4. Set to Off or Wi-Fi.

Bonus Tip: Exit apps not in use to save data and battery.

Problem: Wi-Fi Assist Using Cellular Data

Tip #3: Disable the Wi-Fi Assist Feature.

Suggestion: Prevent your device from using cellular data when Wi-Fi signal is weak.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
  3. Scroll down and turn off Wi-Fi Assist.

Problem: Data Charges Due to Use of Personal Hotspot

Tip #4: Disable Personal Hotspot.

Suggestion: Avoid using personal hotspot unless necessary.
Settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot.
  3. Turn off Allow Others to Join.

Problem: Automatic Video Playback on Social Media

Tip #5: Turn off Autoplay on Videos.

Suggestion: Disable automatic video playback in social media apps.

Steps for Facebook:

  1. Open Facebook, tap the menu icon, and go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  2. Tap Media and Contacts.
  3. Click Never Autoplay Videos.

Steps for X (formerly Twitter):

  1. Open X, tap your profile icon, and go to Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Data Usage
  2. Turn Data saver on.

Problem: Streaming Media

Tip #6: Avoid Streaming Over Cellular.

Suggestion: Stream content over Wi-Fi or adjust settings to lower quality.

Steps for Music:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Music.
  3. Turn off Use Cellular Data

Steps for Podcasts:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Podcasts.
  3. Turn off Use Cellular Data and enable Only Download on Wi-Fi.

Problem: iCloud Using Cellular Data

Tip #7: Disable iCloud on Cellular.

Suggestion: Sync content over Wi-Fi only.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your Apple ID (your name at the top of the settings).
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Tap iCloud Backup.
  5. Turn off Backup Over Mobile Data.

Additionally, to prevent specific apps like Photos from using cellular data for iCloud:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Photos.
  3. Scroll down and tap Cellular Data.
  4. Turn off Cellular Data.

Problem: Unawareness of Data Usage

Tip #8: Monitor Your Cellular Data Usage.

Suggestion: Regularly check your data usage.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
  3. View Current Period Usage.

Bonus Tip: Manually reset your usage statistics each billing cycle by scrolling down in the Cellular settings and
tapping Reset Statistics.

Problem: App Updates Over Cellular Network

Tip #9: Disable Cellular App Updates.

Suggestion: Configure your device to only allow updates over Wi-Fi.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap App Store.
  3. Turn off Automatic Downloads for Apps and Updates or ensure Use Cellular Data is off.
